U.S. to legalize online gaming?

The report by the American Gaming Association, a copy of which was obtained by Onlinecasinocrawler.com, indicates that official “prohibitions” against online gaming just have not been effective.
“By driving all Internet gambling business to foreign entities no jobs are created for American workers,” said David O. Stewart, an attorney, who authored the report for the association “No returns are earned by American companies, and no tax revenues are paid to American governments.”
Massive job creation
Legalized gaming is a massive job generator in states like Nevada. According to Sen. John Ensign (R-Nev.), the unemployment rate nationwide is less than 5 percent, and in Nevada it is “a very low” 3.8 percent. “More than 72,000 jobs have been created in Nevada in the past year—6,500 in March of 2006 alone,” said Sen. Ensign, noting that the entertainment industry is the leading job generator there.Legalization of online gaming will create even more careers, and, experts tell Onlinecasinocrawler.com, it will also resolve the current dilemma for those law-abiding folks who enjoy online gaming, and happen to reside in the U.S.
There are some 2,500 online casinos, worldwide, which American gamers frequent, but which American laws cannot regulate, due to jurisdictional issues, the AGA report said.
The report urged Congress to study the issue, and comes as the United Kingdom and scores of other foreign nations, with legal systems quite similar to America’s, are legalizing and taxing the $12-billion-a-year business.
Sen. Ensign said that arguments are compelling to legalize online gaming in the U.S. “The argument the industry is making is, if it can be done offshore, why not bring it to the U.S. so it can be regulated,” Ensign told the media, after a meeting recently with executives from Harrah’s Entertainment, adding that he does not think online gaming can be “banned” in the U.S.
The senator has been a proponent of the gaming industry, arguing against attempts to ban legal sports betting, saying will only drive more money underground, “and will not make a dent in the illegal gambling on college campuses,” said Ensign.
Still, there are many who oppose proposals like those made in the AGA’s study. Rep. Bob Goodlatte a Republican, and Rep. Rick Boucher, a Democrat, are pushing for legislation that will compel U.S. financial institutions to “cooperate” with law enforcement authorities to stop the flow of money from America to online casinos, located overseas. The Bush administration also backs the bill.
Online gaming is getting a massive boost, moreover, from the upcoming FIFA World Cup Soccer championship. The line is 16:1 that Beckham will be England's top goalscorer is today's headline bet at VCBet - the online sportsbetting site that is part of the Victor Chandler group of Internet gambling operations. The site has lined up some serious online gambling promotions to help make the World Cup a dream event in the lives of soccer fans and Internet gamblers. New players get a $60 free bet, just for walking in the door and placing their first bet. With millions of immigrants from Latin America, where soccer is hugely popular, even more American residents will be partaking in online gaming this summer, experts indicate.
