New video, Internet gaming projects planned for Canada
By Gene Koprowski
Canada's Atlantic Lottery Corp. (ALC) is working with video game producers, collaborating to create new games that involve gambling for the Internet.

ALC last week issued a request for information asking for help to “explore and consider a suite of Internet-based lottery products, including instant win products, casual games as well as other popular games played by consumers on this online medium.”

Presently, ALC provides five online games on its Web site's main page. Spokeswoman Paula Dyke says the Canadian lotto corporation has a number of possible expansion plans.

“This potentially could lead to refreshing the products that exist. There might be new and exciting things that could replace what’s there or we could add to it. But at this point we’re looking to see what’s out there,” says Dyke.

The Canadian province is definitely the jackpot winner when it comes to the lotto corporation. The most recent statistics put government profits from ALC revenues at more than $100 million annually.
The ALC truly sees Internet gaming in its future. According to its RFI, it wants to know more about video game trends “to better understand how these could be applied to the lottery industry.”

Most of ALC’s development contracts are awarded to local companies in Canada's four Atlantic Provinces.  Last year, ALC spent $45 million with Atlantic Canadian companies and $37 million with companies from outside the region, in accordance with ALC’s procurement policy.

The procurement policy allows for single sourcing for “strong business reasons.”  In one recent case, ALC wanted a supplier that reflected international standards for social responsibility as required by membership in the World Lottery Association.  More than 140 companies are members of the WLA.
In May 2005, ALC attended the Interactive Gaming Seminar offered by the WLA and began discussions with "several world lotteries" related to online gaming, a spokesman says.  Boss Media made a presentation to ALC in March 2006 outlining up to 50 games they offered, including "I Bingo."  The contract was awarded in February 2007 and announced by Boss Media in May 2007, not quite a year ago.

The initial cost of the contract with Boss Media is less than $1 million.  The remaining part of the contract is a profit-sharing component based on how well the game performs and whether or not the game stays in our region.
