Internet Gambling Grew Six-Fold in Five Years in U.K.
The figures were part in a report on gambling trends, published yesterday by the U.K. Gambling Commission, a government body.Gerry Sutcliffe, the Culture Minister, said concerns over "problem gaming," were shown to "affect a small minority of people." That is -- only seven percent of gamblers have a problem with online casinos and table games, while 93 percent do not have a problem at all.
The Gambling Act came into effect earlier this month, establishing the Commission as the government regulatory body and imposing a framework of regulations on the industry.
Right-wing conservatives said the new report highlighted the failings of the new Act.
"The biggest growth in problem gambling is on the newer types of gambling, left virtually untouched by the new legislation." said Jeremy Hunt, the shadow culture minister.
Under the new law, gambling companies may advertise on television before the 9 p.m., during sports events.
Conservative Concerns
The Conservatives said the Government should have required overseas companies to register in the U.K. and set up a system to demonstrate their commitment to British regulations.According to Professor Peter Collins, director of the Center for the Study of Gambling at Salford University, the "concern is that unless we have common European regulations a company could set up in France, with none of the safeguards for the vulnerable and children, and advertise to customers in Britain."
