Casinos owned by American Indian tribes reported that sales increased by 1.2 percent in 2008, according to just released statistics from state gambling officials.

Accounting for 70 percent of all net gambling receipts in the state of Washington, Indian casinos generated an estimated $1.48 billion in 2008. That's up  from $1.3 billion in 2007, the Washington State Gambling Commission is reporting.

Ron Allen, who is also chairman of the Jamestown S'Klallam Tribe, and also president of the Washington Indian Gaming Association, said his tribe's casino — the 7 Cedars Casino in Sequim , Clallam County — reports gains of 5 to 6 percent year-over-year, a successful trend that's remained consistent for several years.

"Casinos and resorts are all in the entertainment or hospitality industries and are experiencing that same tightening of the market. But there are a few out there that are still holding their own," said Allen.

A number of factors influence a casino's revenues, including: location, local competition, said Allen.
At Goldie's Shoreline Casino, a spokesman said gaming enterprises "tend to survive a little bit better than the store down the street."
Regulars still come, and those who win $500 are coming back for more on another day.

A card room is kind of like a local tavern, he said: "A person can escape for an afternoon," he said.
For the state's Indian casinos, it's too early to tell how big an impact overall economic trends will have on the discretionary spending habits of gamblers, said Allen.

"There's not enough data yet to discern if those spending patterns are shifting dramatically," he said.
Gaming activities at some locales may simply are leveling off as casinos reach saturation in their respective markets, Allen said, noting too that casinos typically see a slowdown in business during the winter months.
