Card Games Payouts Terminology
By John Patrick
Bet you didn't think I knew any words with 9 letters in them (so, I'm a little weak in counting). These little things may seem unimportant, but in the overall approach to gambling I want you aware of everything.

Peek back to the last chapter and notice how I said the payoffs were always something to something.

For example, a street of three numbers pays 11 to 1. Here's what I'm driving at. You place a chip on the street of 7‑8‑9. Let's say number eight shows. The dealer will slide 11 chips over in front of you and leave your one chip bet on the lay‑out. You were paid 11 chips and remain in action. If you wish to pull that bet down, it is your responsibility to reach out and remove it.

Some lay‑outs will state the payoffs as something for something. Again, let's use the example of the street bet. But this time the lay‑out reads 12 for 1. Now don't go thinking you've found a gold mine of a mistake by that casino.

Again the eight pops up and the dealer slides eleven chips profit to you, along with the chip you had bet on the street. You received 12 chips on that win, but actually it's the exact same return as the 11 to 1.

The casinos that use the word for give no more of a profit than the ones who use the terminology 11 to 1. I just wanted to see if I could get the word into a sentence and sound like I knew what I was saying.

Math Wizards

Speaking of my knowing what I'm saying, it never fails that some guy will challenge my explanation of payouts, insisting that such and such is a better move. All of my attempts at clarification fall on deaf ears, so let's see if I can explain it in simple terms, which by the way, is the extent of my ability to explain.

Several months ago in a class in North Jersey, I was going over a system of betting on the double streets. I was telling the class to place 6 chips on the double street of 10 and 13, thereby picking up six numbers (10, 11, 12, 13, 14 and 15). A fellow by the name of U.R. Lyon was in the audience and immediately challenged my play. "Why should we put 6 chips on the double streets and get paid 5 to 1 for a total of 30 chips, when we could put one chip on each one of the numbers and get paid 35 to 1?".

I explained to U.R. Lyon that he was getting the same pay off, but he said I was lying, that’s like Dolly Parton ridiculing Elizabeth Taylor for being too top heavy ... but that's another story.

It took me a full 20 minutes to get this dork to finally grasp the similarity of the pay offs. It's true, you get 35 to 1 if you play each of those numbers straight up, as opposed to a 5 to 1 pay off for the double street. But let's say number 13 showed and you had 6 chips on the double street. Your 6 chips stay there and the dealer pays you 30 chips. That is your profit.

If U.R. Lyon had one chip on each of those same numbers, he would be paid 35 to 1 for the hit on number 13, his bet on that number would stay there, but he would lose each of the other 5 single bets on 10, 11, 12, 14 and 15, reducing his profit to 30 chips. Both bets give off exact returns.

The same is true for every other like situation. Betting two chips on the split numbers of 16 and 17, as opposed to one chip on each number, gives off the same profit.

Suppose number 17 showed. The guy with two chips on the spit bet gets paid 34 chips and keeps his 2 chips bet for a profit of 34 chips. The guy with a chip on number 16 and a chip on number 17 wins 35 chips when 17 shows, but loses his bet on 16 for a similar profit of 34 chips, while retaining his one chip bet that was on the 17. Both showed the same profit. I want you to use the double streets so that you are able to hold your bets down minimizing your losses, until a streak comes.

The guy betting chips on each number straight up must lay out 6 chips. The guy utilizing the double street method gets the same six numbers, but he can hold his wagers to 5 chips, or 4, or 3, or 2, or even 1. That gives you a heck of a lot of variations to make in your wagering.

The basic payment scale is exactly the same. I felt great when U.R. Lyon finally nodded his head in agreement.

Since I finally won the battle, I tried to get cute in front of the class and demanded he apologize for calling me a lying so and so. His answer?? "Hey, man, people in my family have been called Lyon for years. We consider it a compliment!!!" Go argue with that...
